Philosophy of Recreation

Our primary aim is to provide recreational opportunities for children and much needed respite for families who cannot otherwise afford it. Recreation programs are far more than a means of helping children fill a free time vacuum or find mere entertainment, but rather they are concerned with improving the quality of life of participants.

Recreation springs from free time and can be negative (stealing, substance abuse, sexual abuse, other criminal activities – all detrimental to society and the individual) or positive (playing a game according to rules through a co-operative team effort or taking part in a nature activity – all beneficial to society as well as the individual). Finding challenging, adventurous and positively refreshing activities to do through recreation can add meaning, lustre and beauty to life.

Recreation is not just a matter of motions but also a matter of emotions. Through recreation children can find socially acceptable ways to work off stored up feelings of aggression, to fulfil needs to dominate, destroy, excel, create and improve themselves physically, mentally and culturally.

Our programs are focussed on meeting the need for creative and re-creative activity, which builds, repairs, relaxes and refreshes the mind, body and spirit from the many draining experiences of life.

Our activities stress such ethical concepts as good sportsmanship, courage, fair play, honesty, and consideration for others. Social needs addressed during our programs are the need to: belong, feel secure, gain recognition, love and be loved, and have adventure.
